STEAMup seeks to provide high school students from low opportunity areas in Maricopa country with mentorship from ASU undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). We connect undergraduate students (mentors) with high school students (mentees) to not only provide mentees with an opportunity to connect with someone that has been successful in a field/major that they are interested in; but also, to provide mentors with a meaningful opportunity to develop leadership skills that are transferable to the professional workplace. Navigating the university life can easily be a struggle that many students face; the classes at the university are much harder, the learning is more face-paced, and the expectation for self-teaching is much greater than high school. We hope to alleviate the stress that comes along with this by preparing mentees with skills, knowledge and valuable advice that they can take with them on their undergraduate journey.
